托福口语可谓是惊天地泣鬼神题了,就算你美高蹦跶几年,跟一众美国佬称兄道弟侃天侃地无压力也未必能考个高分。甚至英语母语人士自己去考都不一定有你考的分数高!

托福口语之“反人类”体现在方方面面,尤其是在独立口语上。你赶紧自己说对了说了语音语调OK了,可是最后分数就是不涨……听半天满分答案感觉也没什么奇特,那么为什么自己就考不了高分呢?满分答案到底要具备什么特征呢??

各位同学大家好,我是啄木教育的王璞玮老师,今天想通过这篇文章跟大家分享关于托福口语独立任务题“满分答案”的特点。之所以选这个题目,是因为许多同学都频繁的跟我表达出了这样一种困惑:托福口语一二题好难,准备时间又短,我不知道该怎么说,我也知道我说的好不好…你或许也正被这些问题困惑着;既然如此,这篇文章就能给到你答案。

一、独立题介绍

独立人物题又称IndependentTasks,往简单里说,就是Question & Answer(问&答);在此任务中考生需要谈及自己所熟悉话题,也就是人物、地点、物品或事件。考生需要在15秒的准备时间之后,完成45秒的口语回答。例如官方指南第四版(2012)提供的例题:

Choose a teacher you admire and explain whyyou admire him or her. Please include specific examples and details in yourexplanation.

这个题目就是一个典型的人物类话题,要求考生说一个自己钦佩/欣赏/敬仰的人,并且说明为什么。而随着托福考试的不断迭代更新,话题越来越多,考试的形式也不断发生变化;现在的独立题也不在是简单的“给主题句说理由”的方式,而出现了“利弊题”、“建议题”、“描述题”、“三选一题”;2017年的独立题就考过以上所有的题型,如:

(2017/12/17利弊题) Talk about the advantages or disadvantagesof pop quiz.

(2017/12/16三选一) If you have opportunities to do something forgood causes, which of the following you would choose? Distributing meals forneedy people; helping children build playground; seeing people in hospital.

(2017/12/9建议题)If a foreigner comes to your country to teach high school, what suggestionswould you like to give him, use specific details and examples to support youridea.

(2017/5/20描述题)Describe a behavior that many people may do in public that you findinconsiderate.

面对“星辰大海”般的话题范围、以及“令人捉急”的15秒准备时间,众多考生在独立任务部分败下阵来。那么我们应该如何来回答独立题,今天王老师带你来看看来自ETS的参考答案。

二、满分答案分析

ETS(也就是托福考试的出题机构)前些年在官网公开过独家的权威考试介绍视频Inside the TOEFL Test;其中给一个内容提到了一个托福口语独立题的“高分样本答案”,在这个视频中,一个考生回答了托福口语第二题:

Some people think it’s more fun to spend timewith friends in restaurants or cafes. Others think it is more fun to spend timewith friends at home. Which do you think is better? Explain why.

回答的内容如下:

I actually only spend time with my friends inrestaurants and cafes almost never at home, b’coz my apartment is small, andthere is just almost nothing to do. On the other side, in cafes and restaurantsthere are much more…there are more people the atmosphere is usually good, maybethere are some music played or we didn’t need to discuss things, and meet otherpeople and meet people we do not know possibly, there is always chance to get toknow someone, it is always exciting. For me it is much more exciting than juststaying at home. In the environment that I know, I am familiar with, I thinkit’s boring.

下面是ETS考官对于这位考生的评价:

Now let’slook at the response from the three main criteria: delivery, language use, andtopic development. First is the delivery. His flow of speech is good. And he iseasy to understand. And he is able to sustain his speech for the whole 45seconds without repeating himself. With language use, his language is simpleand direct. And he chooses his words accurately. He doesn’t need to use overlycomplex vocabulary. topic development is also strong. He started by stating hispreference for cafes and says why he doesn’t meet his friend at home becausehis apartment is too small and there’s almost nothing to do there. And he givesseveral reasons why café is better for him. It has a better atmosphere. Oftenthere is music and he can meet new people. So, overall, this meets the criteriafor the score 4 out of 4.

根据以上的考生回答和考官点评我们能够发现一下几个特点

1.答题结构完整;

考生首先回答自己的选择,随之给出了理由一和细节一,接下来又提出了第二个理由和第二个细节;这就告诉我们在独立任务回答的时候可以遵循的一个常见的“总分”结构,即“主题句+ 论点1+ 细节1+论点2 + 细节2”。

2.论点简单、易懂、万能;

第一个论点是“apartmentis very small”,是从对方缺点的方式来论证主题; 第二个论点是“there are more people and the atmosphere isusually good”,这是从已选立场的优点来论证主题。二者的共同点都是运用了通俗易懂的词句,并且还具有一定的“普遍性”。比如,这个组合还可以来回答下面这些题目:

a. Talk about a public place you often go toand explain why.

b. Some students prefer to study in dorm rooms.Others prefer to study in library. Which do you prefer? And explain why.

从这个角度我们能够发现,在考试复习过程中需要准备一些常用的论点,并且把这些语言素材运用熟练;同学们可以尝试着从一下几个角度进行“常用论点”的搜集整理:

a. 时间角度;

这个部分我们常见的表达可以说“省时间”、“提高工作/学习效率”等;

b. 经济角度;

比如“带来经济效益”、“省钱”、“降低成本”等;

c. 个人感受角度;

比如“放松”、“减少工作/学习压力”、“从繁重的工作/学习中解脱”、“对…有兴趣爱好;”

d. 知识角度;

如“增长见识”、“学到了相关的技术、方法”、“大开眼界”等等;

e. 健康角度;

如“有益于或不利于身体健康/心理健康”、“保持身材”

f. 人际交往角度;

如“扩大交际圈”、“认识更多的人”、“人物的性格特点相关表达”、“团队工作的优势”

整理完了以上的语言素材之后,同学们在组织论点的效率就会有明显的提高。:

3.细节展开有条理;

在托福口语评分标准的第三条,“话题展开”(Topic development)明确指出,考生需要“完整回答问题”(Fully Answer),并且要做到语言“连贯”(Coherent)。这里的“连贯”的意思有两个:logical and consistent;可以理解为:有逻辑,且前言搭后语。比如,“we did it because we felt itour duty”这句话的两个意群“we did it”和“we felt it our duty”是由于因果逻辑连接词“because”的存在,而变得连贯;所以说,要做到“连贯”,同学们需要在表达中用到逻辑连接词。

在这个考生的回答当中,因果逻辑随处可见。比如,第一个细节部分,考生说“there’s almost nothing to do”这个就是apartment is small 所延伸出来的后果;第二细节部分,考生说“meet other people and meet people we do notknow possibly, there is always chance to get to know someone, it is alwaysexciting”,这可以理解为下面这种逻辑,“more people → meet other people/get to know someone → exciting”;也就是说,“这个地方人很多,从而能使我有机会遇见更多的人,可以与他们交朋友,这使我非常兴奋”。从这个角度我们发现,考生需要在复习过程中掌握一定的话题展开方式,这样才能让自己的回答变得更加有逻辑,有条理。

综上所述,各位同学在备考独立题的过程中,要克服自己的畏难心理;力求用地道简洁的语言,清晰明了的逻辑,和完整的答题结构把自己的观点传递给考官。
